we do

  • share our ideas, knowledge and learnings
  • offer assistance
  • actively listen
  • explain our role to guests

we don’t

  • diagnose guests or provide advice on medications
  • gossip or talk negatively about others
  • avoid our fair share of the work

openness

we do

  • communicate and behave transparently and honestly
  • listen to each other and be open to constructive feedback
  • address guests by their preferred name / pronouns
  • acknowledge and take responsibility for our mistakes

we don’t

  • avoid responsibility and blame others
  • intimidate others
  • purposefully withhold information from others

respect

we do

  • keep information confidential and assume all privacy laws apply
  • look after our own self care when volunteering
  • treat others with respect and consider other perspectives as equally valid
  • ensure our space is safe

we don’t

  • raise voices, swear or use abusive language
  • judge others on their appearance, history, culture or background
  • overshare our lived experience (no more than 10%)

empowerment

we do

  • acknowledge strengths and skills in others
  • support and mentor each other
  • acknowledge that all volunteers have different perspectives and experiences
  • involve guests in making informed decisions

we don’t

  • talk down to each other
  • dismiss the views and ideas of others without discussion
  • undermine the growth potential of others
